“Iuliu Hatieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca (UMF Cluj) is the best in its field and one of the first institutions from Romania. It was named in 1992, after Professor Iuliu Haţieganu (first dean of Faculty of Medicine, founded in 1919 as part of the University of “Upper Dacia”). In 1948 the independent Medico-Pharmaceutical Institute (I.M.F.) was created, by separating from Cluj University. It was organised into five different faculties: General Medicine, Paediatrics, Stomatology, Pharmacy and Hygiene. Its name has changed into the “University of Medicine and Pharmacy” in 1990. At present it has three faculties: Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy, with more than 7000 students. UMF Cluj is also known abroad, a lot of its students being foreigners who are learning in English and French.
In the last years UMF Cluj was mentioned in four of the most prestigious international rankings: University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), Scimago Institutions Rankings, U-Multirank and Webometrics. UMF Cluj ranks 872 in the world in terms of global research reputation, ranks 742 from the percentage of total publications with international collaboration proint of view, ranks 29 for Clinical Medicine regional research reputation – Europe. In terms of worldwide subject rankings, UMF Cluj ranks 548 in terms of overall performance and ranks 196 according to Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019.
UMF Cluj is one of the first institutions in the country in terms of academic and research performance, known as a university of excellence in the medical and research field.
UMF Cluj strategic plan for 2016-2020 provides for the need to maintain and expand the current profile as a research institution, with the specific objective of achieving high scores in the external evaluations of the research and education centers. In addition to performance in medical education, UMF Cluj extends to a broad spectrum of research niches as genomics, advanced imaging techniques, nano medicine, biotechnology, drug development, pharmacology, development of non-invasive diagnostic tools, public health, translational research, clinical studies and functional studies. UMF is concerned to comply with current tendencies regarding research conduct and to offer quality diagnoses with appropriate tools for population health problems. UMF maintain the cooperation with private sector for research capitalization. Each department of UMF Cluj carries out research activities, their financing being ensured largely from grants and research contracts.
UMF Cluj has two state of the art Research Centers with last generation infrastructure (Research Center for Functional Genomics, Biomedicine and Translational Medicine and Research Center in Advanced Medicine – Medfuture) and their scope is to implement complementary multidisciplinary approaches in order to improve the quality of the research act. In the last years other Research Centers were established, for example: R.C. for Anaesthetics and Intensive Care; R.C. for Paediatric Genetic Disorders; R.C. for Rheumatology; R.C. for Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics; R.C. for Fundamental and Clinical Immunology, R.C. for Ultrasonography, R.C. for Education in Laparoscopic Surgery, R.C. for Hepato-Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy “Octavian Fodor”, The Integrated Research Centre in Gastroenterology, The Centre of Research in Tissue Engineering and Advanced Medical Imaging Technologies, The Integrated Research Centre in Chronic Internal Pathology.
The University has more than 70 international and national projects (H2020, PCE, PNCDIII, TE, PCD) and about 80 internal grants undergoing with more than 50 mil. Euros in grants in the last years.
The2nd Dept of Internal Medicine of the Iuliu Hatieganu University is a well-known center specialized in functional gastrointestinal disorders. It has become the most important in East Europe. Here were organized several events: 2 hands-on courses for HR-manometry and functional investigations of UEG, several neurogastroenterology meeting with international participation; training for east-European and Romanian colleagues. The head of dept. worked with the Rome Foundation and was chairman of the International Liaison Committee of the Rome Foundation, also in the management committee of the COST project GENIEUR on genetics of IBS.
The partner has a specialized center on functional disorders and is an authority in manageing IBS. The center is well equipoed with equipments for endoscopy, manometry, imageing, breath test, impedance -PH monitoring etc. Integrated research center in the pathology of chronic internal diseases” established in 2016, which has an adequate space with researchers, investigators and which carries out activities of recruitment, analysis, collection and storage of samples, obtaining the patient’s consent, etc. Full equipped lab for functional investigations. endoscopy, ultrasonography.
